With their similar names, many drivers wonder, “Are Volvo and Volkswagen the same company?” While they’re both European car companies, they actually have many distinct differences. We’re comparing the two automakers and their vehicles at North Penn Volkswagen to illustrate how they differ.  

Company Origins 

Currently, there are over 100 manufacturing facilities for new Volkswagen vehicles, which are in 27 countries, making them a leading global automaker. They are originally from Germany, with their current headquarters (and the largest manufacturing plant) located in Wolfsburg, Germany.  

The Volvo brand, meanwhile, has Swedish roots. They were founded in Gothenburg, Sweden, although the Volvo Cars brand was bought by a Chinese company in 2010.  

U.S. Production 

While there are Volkswagen manufacturing plants all over the world, there is a large plant in Chattanooga, TN. There are many Volkswagen vehicles that are American made, including the Volkswagen Atlas, Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, and the Volkswagen ID.4. The other models are imported from Europe and Mexico.  

Volvo also has a manufacturing plant in America, which is located in Ridgeville, SC. The other models are imported from Sweden, Belgium, and China.  

Defining Qualities 

The Volvo brand is known for its goal of an all-electric lineup, and their luxury vehicles are known for their minimalistic Scandinavian styling and advanced safety features. While Volkswagen vehicles have many premium features, they don’t have the price tag that you’ll see with a Volvo model.  

With their German engineering, they also have enhanced driving dynamics. Plus, they offer robust options, with the largest Volkswagen SUV (the Volkswagen Atlas) having almost 50 extra cubic feet of passenger volume than the largest Volvo SUV (the Volvo XC90). Volkswagen also offers its own all-electric models, including the Volkswagen ID.4 (a compact SUV) and the Volkswagen ID. BUZZ (a three-row minivan).
