What should I do after a car accident?
Take a deep breath and assess the situation. Your body is full of adrenaline so beware of your surroundings.
Check to see if anyone was hurt
Call 911 for emergency assistance otherwise, contact the police department to file an accident report.
NEVER leave the scene until instructed by the police
Do not admit fault, offer opinions, or reveal your policy limits
Only discuss the accident details with the police and your insurance.
Exchange information with those involved. You will need names, driver’s license numbers, contact information, insurance companies and policy numbers, vehicle descriptions (make, model, year, color and plate number) location of the accident, eyewitness names and contact information and lastly the police officers name and badge number.
If your car is not drivable, the police will arrange towing in most cases. If not, request roadside assistance
Take photos of all vehicles involved and the accident scene IF safe.
File A Claim
You should start the claim process immediately, most insurances have 800 numbers to contact on the back of the ID card. You may also use a mobile app and lastly contact your insurance agent.Â
What you should NOT do
Never agree to phone recordings or signing statements for the other driver’s insurance company.
Never let anyone decide where your vehicle will be repaired, this choice is YOURS to make.
Get fooled by low ball estimates and deductible gimmicks at the expense of the parts installed on your vehicle.
Think you have a stupid question? Please, do not hesitate to call us, we’re here to help.
