What Is a Rear Differential?

The differential is part of the assembly of your vehicle’s drive axle. It’s a gear system that essentially allows the two wheels on the axle to spin at different speeds. Since the outer wheel will have to spin faster on a turn, the differential is vital. If you’re driving a 4Motion VW, it will have both a front and a rear differential.

What Service Does the Rear Differential Need?

The most common service a rear differential will need is fluid exchange. Differential fluid lubricates the rear differential, but it can become contaminated over time and may even begin to break down. Our technicians will inspect the differential for leaks and excessive wear, then drain and properly fill with VW-approved fluid using specialty tools. Some models include a filter which requires additional servicing.

How Often Should I Get the Rear Differential Checked?

Your 4Motion equipped vehicle should have the rear differential unit serviced every 3 years and/or 30,000 miles per manufacturer receommendations.
