2024 Volkswagen Taos vs. Hyundai Kona

2024 VW Taos

Deciding on the perfect compact SUV can be challenging. The 2024 Volkswagen Taos is a crowd favorite, but how does it compare to the 2024 Hyundai Kona? While both offer unique features, the VW Taos has some clear advantages. The North Penn Volkswagen team highlights some key differences between these crossovers.

Power and Efficiency

The 2024 Volkswagen Taos packs a punch with its 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, delivering 158 horsepower. This impressive engine doesn’t sacrifice fuel efficiency when driving on the highway or in city streets. The standard Hyundai Kona engine is a naturally aspirated 147-horsepower mill. While there’s a 195-horsepower Hyundai Kona variant, it’s only in the top two – that is to say, most expensive – trims.

Space and Comfort

Both SUVs offer comfortable seating for five, but the 2024 Volkswagen Taos stands out with excellent passenger and cargo space. AWD VW Taos models offer 24.9 to 60.2 cubic feet of cargo volume, while FWD models have 27.9 to 65.9 cubic feet. This compares favorably to the Hyundai Kona, which offers 25.5 to 63.7 cubic feet. The Volkswagen Taos also has a power tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof to give it more of an open feel compared to the Hyundai Kona.

Technology and Safety

The 2024 Volkswagen Taos comes standard with advanced IQ.DRIVE® technology, which includes a suite of driver-assistance features. These features include Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Assist, and Active Blind Spot Monitor. While the Hyundai Kona offers its version of driver-assistance features, the VW Taos IQ.DRIVE technology has an edge thanks to standard adaptive cruise control, which isn’t available on the Hyundai model’s base trim and is relegated to a package on some others.
