The Volkswagen Atlas makes a big impact everywhere it goes. The midsize SUV, which is the largest in the Volkswagen lineup, has also had a big presence in the market since its inception. North Penn Volkswagen is providing a look back at its rich history.

2016

The Volkswagen Atlas was first unveiled in 2016 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Its name comes from the Greek titan Atlas, known for carrying the weight of the heavens on his shoulders, and is meant to represent the generous size of this spacious three-row SUV.

2017

The initial Volkswagen Atlas SUVs were released in 2017 as 2018 models. Since it was designed and marketed for United States drivers and built in Chattanooga, TN, the first models were sold in the United States and Canada.

2020

The Volkswagen Atlas formula proved successful enough that Volkswagen announced a smaller two-row counterpart to the Volkswagen Atlas in 2020. Called the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, this compact SUV is a sportier five-passenger version of the Volkswagen Atlas. It originally debuted as a 2020 model and was also built in Chattanooga, TN.

2024

The Volkswagen Atlas had a light refresh in 2021 to help it better align with the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport. Its next notable redesign occurred in 2024, which included some significant updates. It features a new powertrain, a revamped exterior style, and an upgraded cabin with even more upscale details and materials.
