A differential is part of your vehicle’s drivetrain. It helps your wheels rotate at different speeds, which is what allows you to turn smoothly. There are different types of differentials, such as:

• Open differential – the most common type, which distributes equal torque to both wheels, though when one wheel loses traction and spins freely, the other receives little to no torque
• Locking differential – locks both of your axles together, so they must turn at the same speed
• Limited-slip differential – limits power loss to a slipping wheel by transferring additional torque to the wheel with greater traction

What Is Differential Oil?

The primary role of differential oil (also known as differential fluid) is to lubricate the different components of your differential. It can also help keep it clean; without it, you run the risk of serious damage, due to heat, friction, and oxidation. Differential oil is typically much thicker than engine oil and has a strong sulfur-like odor.

Do You Need Differential Oil Service?

Yes, you should schedule differential oil service regularly. During a service appointment, we will check for leaks. The fluid should also be replaced routinely, to ensure it can adequately lubricate your differential. As a general rule of thumb, it should be replaced every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, although it’s important to check your owner’s manual to see your vehicle’s specific guidelines.
